Extended Memory Specification
(X-M-S)
A memory specification which allows programs to access and use memory above 1MB. A computer must be operating in protected mode in order to access extended memory directly. The memory manager (usually the operating system or environment) will supervise access to extended memory. This keeps two programs from trying to access the same block of memory and interfere with each other.
