Wireless Local Area Network
(W-lan)
A WLAN is pretty much just what the name suggests: a local area network that is based on wireless rather than wired technology. Wireless LANs are based on IEEE's standard for wireless LANs (IEEE 802.11). Most WLANs are composed of a combination router and transmitter that connects to a broadband link on one side and a local machine on the other side. Other computers connect to the LAN via the wireless link which can extend for very short distances or rather long distances if boosted. Sometimes the connection area created by the transmitter is called a wireless hotspot. Depending on how the network is set up connecting to the hotspot can be as simple as turning your computer on and having it automatically connect to various log-on and encryption techniques designed to protect the network from outside influences.
