Structured Query Language
(sequel)
A database access language designed around English-like statements. SQL, in some form or other, has become a de facto standard supported by many database programs.
IBM developed SQL in the 1970s for System R. The first SQL standard is dated 1986 with revisions made in 1989 and 1992. Expansion of the standard continues today with SQL2 and SQL3.
