Spam Over Instant Messaging
(sp-im)
Otherwise known as messaging spam, spim is basically unwanted advertising material sent via instant messaging channels instead of E-mail. SPIM is attractive to advertisers because some instant messaging systems collect demographic information from their users and this information can be gathered by the advertisers. This allows them to target their ads and perhaps get a better response from them. Other methods of spreading SPIM would include IRC bots that target various Internet Relay Chat channels.
