Phase Alternating Line
(pal)
A European television standard. The U.S. NTSC standard is 525 lines at 60 half-frames/second; PAL is 625 lines at 50 half-frames/second. PAL uses amplitude modulation for video and frequency modulation for audio and phase is distributed such that the receiver cancels phase errors to keep color correct.
