Open Database Connectivity
(O-D-B-C)
A standard designed to make database information easily accessible. Programmers write to ODBC standards and the ODBC level collects information from native database files. Version 1.0 was released in September 1992.
ODBC interfaces/drivers exist for a wide variety of database systems and development tools are available for all popular operating systems.
ODBC was defined by the SQL Access Group. It is not a Microsoft standard, although Microsoft was the first to release a commercial ODBC product.
