Next Generation Internet
(N-G-I)
A project to develop the next version of the Internet (vintage 1998). Under development are two different tests; one running about 100 times faster (initially 100 universities testing it) and one running about 1,000 times faster (initially about 10 sites testing it). The NGI project started in 1996 as an offshoot of the existing very high-speed Backbone Network Service and Internet2 initiatives.
