Network File System
(N-F-S)
A network operating system that allows access to shared files regardless of computer type. Connected computers can act as both a client and server. NFS was designed by Sun Microsystems and has been incorporated into many different products.
In a very, very large network of Sun computers NFS has in the past caused all machines to freeze up when one goes down. This has led some to term NFS "Nightmare File System."
