Network Address Translation
(nat)
Software and hardware that allows an internal network to use one set of IP addresses while using a second set of IP addresses for external network connections. A NAT box performs the translation. NAT effectively hides internal IP addresses in addition to making certain there are no conflicts with the internal IP addresses and the external world.
