Maximum Transmission Unit
(M-T-U)
The biggest packet size (in bytes) a network can transmit. Different networks have different MTUs. Ideally, you want to send out packets the size of the smallest MTU of all the networks that packet will transmit through so packets don't get broken up and slowed down. As a general rule, most PPP networks have an MTU of 576 while Ethernet networks have an MTU of 1500.
