International Telecommunications Union
(I-T-U)
An international organization chartered to determine and encourage standards of communications. The ITU was founded in 1865. They meet every four years (2000 was a meeting year) to adopt new standards. The ITU assumed the ITU name 1 March 1993. Prior to that it was known as CCITT which is now a standing committee of the ITU.
