Disk Operating System

(doss)

A program that links users and programs with files in storage. There are many disk operating systems covering many different hardware platforms. DOS must handle physical disk I/O, mapping of a file's location(s) on the disk, and provide some method of file protection from unauthorized access if it's possible for multiple users to access a file at the same time.

Originally, DOS was one of the choices of operating systems for the IBM 360 line of mainframe computers.
