Central Processing Unit
(C-P-U)
Short name for the processor that runs the computer (e.g., Pentium, PowerPC, 8088, 6502, Alpha, or one of many others). Through interaction with various registers, buffers, and control lines the CPU can control virtually everything in the computer.
