Carrier Detect
(C-D)
Part of a communication protocol. When two modems, for example, connect they generate a carrier detect signal that continues during the connection.
Note, if a call waiting signal comes through while modems are connected this signal may interrupt the carrier detect and drop the modem connection. This is why most people recommend turning off call waiting during data calls.
