Address Resolution Protocol
(A-R-P)
A member of the Internet routing protocols; specifically, the protocol that resolves numerical Internet Protocol addresses into physical network addresses (their Ethernet address). The protocol involves a query in that an ARP packet is sent out containing an Internet address and waits for some host to send back the associated Ethernet address.
